Rachel called the dealership and let them know she needed her starter repaired. They asked her what kind of loaner car she wanted and she said “Something sporty.” Impressively, they sent two guys over right away with the tow truck for her van, and left her a red Miata. The sports car begged to be driven.

Unable to stay sequestered at home, Rachel decided to treat herself to dinner out. She drove the Miata to 30th Street, half-aware that it was the same street Patrice lived on. At Boulder Cork, she ordered a teriyaki steak, and ate while perusing the latest issue of the Colorado Review.

In the past, she had enjoyed having a good meal and reading stories from emerging talent then going home to her safe, predictable evenings. But now, as she signed the credit card receipt and grabbed her purse, she felt trepidation at the idea of going home alone. She had always gone home alone. Even when Gavin was there, it was like being alone. They hardly spoke during the last year of their marriage. And since then, she had buried herself in her work and blocked everything out for the most part. Yet, something had awakened in her. Patrice had stirred the beast. Well, she thought wryly, the Almost-Beast.

Making her way toward the parking lot, she tried to think of something to occupy her mind when she got home. Maybe she’d watch a movie. Maybe…maybe Patrice will call. Surprised by the sentiment, she reapplied herself to the resolve she’d put in place that day when Patrice was on her knees before her, supplicating. She could not be trusted, no matter how engaging her smile was. No matter how disarming her wit, how hypnotizing her eyes.

Clicking the keyless entry keychain mechanism, the locks of the Miata disengaged. She climbed in and closed the door, lost in distraction. Forcing herself to start the engine, she drove back home, resolved to an evening of more isolation.

When she walked inside, she immediately saw the blinking light on the answering machine, and felt the arrhythmia leap through her chest.
